What is Griha Pravesham?
Griha Pravesham, written in Tamil households as Gruhapravesam and elsewhere as Griha Pravesh, is the ceremony observed when a family enters a new home for the first time. The house is prepared, the family's deities are invited in, and the home is formally taken into use on a chosen day.
Traditional texts distinguish between different kinds of house entry, and priests still refer to the distinction when planning the day. Entering a newly built house for the first time is treated differently from returning to a house after a long absence, which is in turn treated differently from re-entering a house after major repair or reconstruction. Which of these applies to your situation affects what is performed, which is one of the first things your Iyer will ask.
When is Griha Pravesham performed?
The day is fixed by muhurtham rather than by convenience. A priest looks at the panchangam for the tithi, the nakshatram and the lagnam, and reads these together with the nakshatram of the head of the household and the family's own practice. Many families in Chennai also avoid certain Tamil months for functions of this kind, and most ceremonies are timed for the morning, before Rahu Kalam.
Customs differ between families and between sampradayams, so the right question is not which dates are auspicious in general, but which dates work for your family and your house. If you have a date in mind already, tell us and we will confirm whether an Iyer is available. If you do not, we can help you narrow it down.
A practical note on timing: auspicious dates fall on a small number of days each month, and those days fill early. If your move-in is tied to a handover date or a lease, start the conversation as soon as the date looks likely rather than once it is fixed.

What happens during Griha Pravesham?
No two Griha Pravesham ceremonies are identical. What is performed depends on the kind of entry, on what the family observes, and on how much time and space the venue allows. The components below are the ones most commonly included in Chennai, in roughly the order they tend to occur.
- Ganapathi Pooja, performed at the start so that the rest of the day proceeds without obstruction.
- Punyahavachanam, the purification of the space and of the materials to be used.
- Vastu-related rituals, addressed to the presiding spirit of the site and structure. Some families include a Vastu Homam here.
- Kalasha sthapanam, the establishing of the sacred pot, which the family then carries into the house.
- Navagraha-related rituals, where the family observes them or where the priest advises them for the chosen day.
- The entry itself, when the family crosses the threshold at the muhurtham time, usually right foot first, carrying the kalasam.
- Paal kaachal, the boiling of milk in a new vessel until it rises and overflows, taken as the first use of the kitchen.
- Homam, where the family has chosen to include one.
- Satyanarayana Pooja, which many families perform on the same day or shortly afterwards.
Your Iyer will go through this list with you beforehand and tell you which parts apply, which are optional, and roughly how long the sequence you choose will take.
Griha Pravesham pooja items
The list below covers what is usually needed. Treat it as a starting point rather than a final list: the Iyer confirms the exact requirements once the rituals for your day are settled, and families often add items their own tradition calls for.

Griha Pravesham at home in Chennai
Most of the Griha Pravesham ceremonies we arrange take place in flats and apartments rather than independent houses, and the ceremony adapts to the space without difficulty. The two things worth sorting out in advance are the homam, if you are including one, and the kitchen.
For a homam in an apartment, check what your building association permits and make sure the room you plan to use has real ventilation. Some families move the homam to a balcony or a common area; others leave it out and keep the rest of the ceremony intact. For the milk boiling, the kitchen needs a working stove connection on the day, which is often the thing that gets overlooked when a handover runs late.
The Iyer for your ceremony
We arrange an Iyer with experience in the ceremony you are planning and, where it matters to you, one who speaks the language your family is most comfortable in. Tell us if there is a particular tradition your family follows, or a priest you have worked with before, and we will take that into account.
Griha Pravesham pooja cost
We do not publish a fixed price for Griha Pravesham, because the ceremonies genuinely differ. The cost depends on which rituals you include, whether a homam is part of the day, how many priests are needed, how long the ceremony runs, whether you would like the samagri arranged for you, and where in Chennai the house is.
Tell us what you are planning and we will come back with the arrangement and the cost together, before anything is confirmed.

Questions
Griha Pravesham: common questions
Can I book an Iyer for Griha Pravesham in Chennai?
Yes. Tell us the date you have in mind and the location of the house, and we will arrange an Iyer for the ceremony, subject to availability and service coverage.
Can it be performed in an apartment?
Yes. Griha Pravesham is regularly performed in apartments and flats. Where a homam is part of the ceremony, the arrangement depends on ventilation and on whether your building permits it, so tell us in advance and we will plan accordingly.
How long does the ceremony take?
It depends on which rituals the family chooses to include. A shorter arrangement centred on the entry and the milk boiling may run two to three hours, while a fuller ceremony including Vastu rituals, a homam and a Satyanarayana Pooja can run longer. We confirm the expected duration when the arrangements are agreed.
What items are needed?
The list generally includes a kalasam and coconut, mango leaves, fresh flowers, turmeric, kumkum, betel leaves and nuts, fruits, rice, jaggery, navadhanyam, ghee, camphor, a new set of vessels and milk for the boiling. The exact list varies with the rituals included and with family custom, and your Iyer will confirm it beforehand.
How early should I book?
As early as you can. Auspicious dates cluster into a small number of days each month and those days are booked quickly, particularly during the periods when most families prefer to move in. If you already have a muhurtham in mind, contact us as soon as the date is decided.
Can Namma Iyer provide the pooja samagri?
Tell us what you would like arranged when you enquire and we will confirm what can be provided for your ceremony and what the family should keep ready.
Can you help with planning the ceremony?
Yes. Most families arranging a Griha Pravesham for the first time want to know what is performed, what they need to keep ready and how long the day will run. That conversation is part of the arrangement.
