When is Satyanarayana Pooja performed?
Most commonly on Pournami, the full moon day, though families perform it on any auspicious day and frequently on the same day as a Griha Pravesham. It is usually held in the evening, though morning is equally acceptable.
What happens during Satyanarayana Pooja?
A Ganapathi pooja opens the ceremony, followed by the kalasha sthapanam, the main pooja, the reading of the katha in its several chapters, the aarti, and the distribution of prasadam.
No two ceremonies are identical. What is performed depends on what your family observes and on the venue, so treat the sequence below as the common shape rather than a fixed order. Your Iyer will go through it with you beforehand.
- Ganapathi Pooja
- Kalasha sthapanam
- The main pooja
- Reading of the katha
- Aarti and prasadam
What to keep ready
A starting point rather than a final list. Your Iyer confirms the exact requirements once the ceremony is settled, and families often add items their own tradition calls for.
- Kalasam, coconut and mango leaves
- Banana stems and leaves for the mandapam
- Wheat rava, jaggery, ghee and banana for the prasadam
- Turmeric, kumkum, betel leaves and nuts
- Fruits, flowers and garlands
- Lamps, ghee, camphor and wicks
The Iyer for your ceremony
We arrange an Iyer with experience in the ceremony you are planning and, where it matters to you, one who speaks the language your family is most comfortable in. Tell us if there is a particular tradition your family follows, or a priest you have worked with before.
Cost and booking
We do not publish a fixed price, because these ceremonies genuinely differ. The cost depends on what is included, how many priests are needed, how long it runs, whether you would like the samagri arranged for you, and where in Chennai it takes place.
Tell us what you are planning and we will come back with the arrangement and the cost together, before anything is confirmed.

Questions
Satyanarayana Pooja: common questions
Does it have to be on a full moon day?
No. Pournami is the most common choice, but families perform it on any auspicious day, and often on the same day as a house-entry ceremony.
How long does it take?
Usually two to three hours including the katha. We confirm the expected duration when the arrangements are agreed.
Can it be held in an apartment?
Yes. It needs no fire, so it suits a flat without any special arrangement.
Is the prasadam prepared by the family?
Usually yes, by the family, from the items listed above. Tell us if you would like something else arranged and we will confirm what is possible.
