When is Seemantham performed?
The month is chosen according to family custom. Seemantham is commonly observed in the seventh or eighth month, with the ceremony usually timed to a morning window. Families differ on whether it is held for the first pregnancy alone or later ones as well.
What happens during Seemantham?
The sequence usually opens with a Ganapathi pooja and punyahavachanam, followed by the rituals particular to the occasion, the blessing of the expectant mother by the elder women of both families, and the giving of bangles. Some families include a homam.
No two ceremonies are identical. What is performed depends on what your family observes and on the venue, so treat the sequence below as the common shape rather than a fixed order. Your Iyer will go through it with you beforehand.
- Ganapathi Pooja
- Punyahavachanam
- The Seemantham rituals themselves
- Blessings and bangles from the elder women
- Homam, where the family includes one

What to keep ready
A starting point rather than a final list. Your Iyer confirms the exact requirements once the ceremony is settled, and families often add items their own tradition calls for.
- Turmeric, kumkum, betel leaves and nuts
- Flowers, garlands and jasmine
- Bangles for the ceremony
- Fruits, coconuts and bananas
- Lamps, ghee, camphor and wicks
- New clothes and silk for the occasion
The Iyer for your ceremony
We arrange an Iyer with experience in the ceremony you are planning and, where it matters to you, one who speaks the language your family is most comfortable in. Tell us if there is a particular tradition your family follows, or a priest you have worked with before.
Cost and booking
We do not publish a fixed price, because these ceremonies genuinely differ. The cost depends on what is included, how many priests are needed, how long it runs, whether you would like the samagri arranged for you, and where in Chennai it takes place.
Tell us what you are planning and we will come back with the arrangement and the cost together, before anything is confirmed.

Questions
Seemantham: common questions
Where is Seemantham usually held?
Most often at the expectant mother's parents' home, though families increasingly hold it wherever there is room for the guests. We arrange the priest for whichever venue you choose in Chennai.
Which month is it performed in?
Commonly the seventh or eighth month, though the exact timing follows family custom. Your priest will help you settle on a suitable window once you share the details.
How long does it take?
The duration depends on your family’s sequence and whether a homam is included. We confirm the expected duration when the arrangements are agreed.
Can you arrange a Tamil-speaking priest?
Yes. Tell us the language your family is most comfortable in when you enquire and we will take it into account.
