When is Upanayanam performed?
The age at which Upanayanam is performed varies by family and tradition. The date is fixed by muhurtham, and because the ceremony draws a large gathering it is generally planned well in advance.
What happens during Upanayanam?
The day typically includes a Ganapathi pooja, punyahavachanam, the naandi or ancestral remembrance, the investiture of the sacred thread, the teaching of the Gayatri mantra by the father, and a homam. Several families also perform related rituals on the preceding evening.
No two ceremonies are identical. What is performed depends on what your family observes and on the venue, so treat the sequence below as the common shape rather than a fixed order. Your Iyer will go through it with you beforehand.
- Naandi and preliminary rituals
- Ganapathi Pooja and Punyahavachanam
- Investiture of the sacred thread
- Teaching of the Gayatri mantra
- Homam
- Bhiksha and the concluding rituals
What to keep ready
A starting point rather than a final list. Your Iyer confirms the exact requirements once the ceremony is settled, and families often add items their own tradition calls for.
- Sacred thread and kaupinam
- Danda, the staff carried by the boy
- Veshti, angavastram and new clothes
- Homa dravyam: samithu, ghee and grains
- Turmeric, kumkum, betel leaves and nuts
- Rice, fruits, coconuts and flowers
The Iyer for your ceremony
We arrange an Iyer with experience in the ceremony you are planning and, where it matters to you, one who speaks the language your family is most comfortable in. Tell us if there is a particular tradition your family follows, or a priest you have worked with before.
Cost and booking
We do not publish a fixed price, because these ceremonies genuinely differ. The cost depends on what is included, how many priests are needed, how long it runs, whether you would like the samagri arranged for you, and where in Chennai it takes place.
Tell us what you are planning and we will come back with the arrangement and the cost together, before anything is confirmed.

Questions
Upanayanam: common questions
How long does Upanayanam take?
It is one of the longer ceremonies, commonly running a full morning, and many families hold related rituals on the previous evening. We confirm the schedule with you when the arrangements are agreed.
How many priests are needed?
It depends on the scale of the ceremony and the rituals included. We will tell you what your ceremony requires once we understand what you are planning.
How far in advance should we book?
As early as possible. Upanayanam dates cluster into particular periods of the year and priests are booked out well ahead.
Can it be held at home?
Yes, where there is room for the homam and the gathering. Many families use a hall instead, and we arrange the priest for either.
